Ante Puletaha Kiingi

Ngaati Maniapoto

Ante is a Ngaati Maniapoto artist based in Hamilton. He has only recently decided to pursue a love for art but has grown up with a strong passion for creative expression. Ante has been surrounded by creatives his whole life, with his older brother, a Graffiti artist, being the biggest artistic inspiration and influence. The majority of his recent work has been digital but as a lover of creative expression in all forms he also likes to explore traditional sketching, street art and Maaori Carving. He is heavily influenced by urban graffiti, toi Maaori and comic/anime style animation which are the ways he usually expresses creative concepts.

Whaanau Matariki

Limited edition signed digital illustrations on archival paper

These illustrations are for a coming book. The series shown are the artists proofs. Individual prints are in an edition of twenty in support of Toi o Te Tau Hou and are available for purchase on request.

Nine individual digital art figures personify each star in the Matariki cluster. They are accompanied by aspects of the environmental factors that each star represents, with references to the work of Dr Rangi Mataamua.

I also hope to publish these illustrations as a children’s book. I aim to eventually get my book into schools to contribute to the education regarding our Maaori New Year to our youth.  Selling a limited edition of the proofs will enable the completion of this project, as well as support Toi o te Tau Hou.
