Jake Scurrah

The Kingdom of Tonga

Of Tongan descent Jake is a 22-year-old artist born and raised in Kirikiriroa. He has been working as a tutor and mentor for the Talents Of The Pacific Academy (TOPA). His goal is to give students the tools they need to embrace and appreciate their culture, develop their abilities, and be positive role models for others. Contemporary dance is still quite fresh to Jake; his passion for it only began a few years ago. As a young teenager growing up he had no knowledge of his Tongan culture nor knew any fundamental values. Since starting out with TOPA at age sixteen, the staff have helped in strengthening his ties to Tongan culture through literal dance. He found his passion through dancing and now it has become his life.

Ko ‘eku fa‘ifa‘itaki‘anga (My role model)

Documented performance: contemporary dance. (2.30 minutes), 2023

For me Matariki is about renewal and growth. It’s the time to celebrate who we are, our identity, our ancestors. It is a time to remember those who have passed and honour the memories of our loved ones. I intend to reflect who I am and where I come from, a mix of contemporary Pasifika dance and video that will portray the discovery of my true identity. Dance is my creative freedom, it has its ultimate goal, the fusion between the material and spiritual, I want to be the instrument to give love, peace and harmony to the world.
