Chantel Mathews

Ngaati Hounuku, Ngaati Tahinga, Ngaati Ikaunahi, Tainui, Paakeha, Middlesex, England

Chantel Matthews is a conceptual artist, writer and curator. Exploring how women hold space and time, particularly as a mother, artist and waahine Maaori, Chantel looks at the ‘everyday’ as inspiration, often pushing the boundaries to create multiple access points for the audience to ponder. With an interest in how waahine traverses between tapu and noa, whakapapa, wananga and kai gathering is often part of Chantel’s concepts. Chantel holds a Master of Visual Arts AUT. Recipient of Waikato Tainui 2022 Scholarship Award for Mahi Toi and Te Reo aspirations and AUT Art and Design 2021 Toi Maaori Award. She resides in Taamaki Makaurau.

Body of Waiuu o Hina

Fired raku clay, mixed media and sound

I am a vessel of ‘Hina’s Milk’ made with the flesh of Papatuuaanuku. I hold the night, I hold the day. I have no beginning and no end as I fill and flow with the tides high and low. Wearing the weight of many chiefs I am the day, I am the night. I am the warmth of Hina’s milk.

He ipu ‘Waiuu o Hina’ ahau kua waihangatia ki te kiko o Papatuuaanuku. Ka pupuru au i te poo, ka pupuru au i te ao. Kaaore he tiimatanga, kaaore he mutunga.

This artwork explores notions related to the maramataka with own intuitive waahine cycle focussing on intuitive connections of wellbeing.
